Cables gone Olympic-Style

Here's the first look at Twisted Sisters' Eve, a ribbed reversible cable scarf. Knit in TS's Petite Voodoo (50% silk 50% merino). Since this photo was taken last week, she's been frogged, restarted and is now progressing quite well. (I decided to move down a needle size to US5). As I'm a pokey knitter, I should get back to work on her... She's my project for the Knitting Olympics! Plus the Women's Bobsled competition (one of my faves) is on right now, complete with a big wipe-out run, so there is be no better time to knit Olympic style. Knit on.

I finally have photos to post of my cable-along projects. I have been making cable knit purses. It all began with a sassy little bag for me...

...then I made one for a girlfriend...

...and then other friends made requests.

I found the pattern online and just got carried away trying different cable patterns. I'm even teaching a project class at Knit Cafe on this bag. It has been a big hit and so much fun to knit. I'm very happy to report that I have been a good little cable KALer. I have more cable knit projects in mind, you'll just have wait to see!

I absolutely love my IK Cabled Shrug!!! I used 5 skeins of Rowan Magpie which is approximatley 770 yards and the pattern calls for 1200 yards. However, it fits well and is not falling off me.

Update on my Pink Cable Scarf

And not, say the oat wheat sweater, which I haven't even looked at. Ahem. Anyway, the pink cable scarf. I timed how long a repeat took me (4 rows) and it was 20 minutes. Twenty freakin' minutes. So an inch and a half an hour and in only 40 hours - a work week! I'll be done. So far, 11 inches, sixteen and a half hours. Only eleventy million hours to go......

I started this sweater in late November for an early December birthday present and had a heck of a time with the sizing due to the cable pulling it in and making it skinny and long, and then how to create the right size sleeves, and how to attach the sleeves! I'm still here, and still cabling! I just started knitting Bonne Marie's Twist cardi last week and am up to the cabley goodness. I first thought that the chart was going to be difficult, but I've gotten the hang of it and think the cables are really coming along nicely. I'm using Knitpicks Wool of the Andes in Cranberry.

For those who were curious about the hat pattern. It was based upon Coronet from Knitty. I used a tighter cable so the hat would match a sweater I recently finished. See my blog archives, or gallery. You won't find the pattern for the sweater, since I designed it using the Top Down Aran method described by Beth Brown-Reinsel. ( Interweave Knits, Fall 1997 ) and I take crummy notes.

Well, I could not keep my hands off of the Jo Sharp SilkRoad Ultra. Matching hat is done, and will not be a vacation project.

In the mean time, I'm fascinated with the reversable cable scarfs in "Scarf Style". Maybe I'll take yarn and a pattern for one of those.

Hat to match sweater

I just joined this KAL, and will be making a hat to match a top down aran sweater I just finished. To see that, go to the bottom of this gallery page. I'm using the idea from Knitty for the Coronet hat. My cable will be tighter to match the already finished sweater. I cast on and did a few rows this weekend. I'm planning on putting it into a zip lock bag to take on vacation.

The nasty yellow is the provisional cast on; this cable will be grafted when it is long enough into a headband, then I'll pick up stitches around the edge for the crown. The picture reeks, but when I return, there may be a finished hat.

My New Ongoing Cable Project

Technically it started out as a swatch but it's pretty! So it will, one day, be a scarf. I think Jennifer is right, it's slow because it's a little complex (although I think I am actually beginning to learn how to "read" cables, wonder of wonders).

It's actually a little bigger than this now. It's slow going. The pattern is the one in the lower right corner, from the Harmony Series. I'm not knitting it on metal dpn's either. Yikes. Regular bamboo needles. Kind of weird after mostly using circs forever. The balance feels......off. But the yarn clings, so it's all yay good.

Finished Irish Cabled Walking Hat

I finished my first hat - woo hoo. First thing is first, here is my Irish Walking Hat. I used Knitchicks adaption to the Stitch n' Bitch Nation pattern. Her directions are fantastic and very easy to work.

Yarn: 1 and 1/2 skeins of Karabella Aurora 8 - Grey #8

Needles: US#8 DPN along with a wooden cable needle

Notes: I did 6 repeats and I think that I will be doing only 5 the next time since it is a tad bit to long. I was able to complete more then 1/2 today. I was in a hurry. I want to get the things off my list so I can win Naked Stix 2006. 1 down 19 to go. On to finishing my cabled wrist warmers or my cabled head band.

I'm in the midst of two baby sweaters (in the smallest and largest sizes) that are nicely cabled. Actually, on the first I got a pattern I really liked, then I tried to duplicate it on the second and the second doesn't look as good because there are more pattern repeats. Blogger ish't taking my picture right now, but I have a photo on my blog.

I finally finished what was originally supposed to be my very first cabling project way back when this KAL started. It's the Good Ole Cabled Scarf
which is a lovely, lovely pattern....so simple, and such a nice FO. It just took me FOREVER because I have a very short attention span.

I used size 9 Denise Interchangables and about 2.5 skeins of Debbie Bliss Alpaca Silk which is SO gorgeous.

I don't know if I will ever, ever, ever have the patience to make a cabled scarf like this again, but I love the way this one came out.

Now back to our regularly scheduled cabling...

I'm back to cabling after a short hiatus. I'm working on the sleeves to Blackberry from the latest Knitty. I've been trying out knitting without a cable needle, the Grumperina way, but am finding that my cable just look more neat when using a cable needle. I think I'm going to do the other sleeve with the needle. I'm enjoying the Lamb's Pride Bulky, and think it will be the perfect sweater for this holiday season. It's been pretty cold here (in No. Cal terms) and am looking forward to bundling up in it!

Here it is. I made this yesterday and it was quick and painless. This is my version of the Irish Hiking Cell Phone / Camera Cover. I used Muench Touch Me Chenille which I would say I would not recommend to the new knitter. I loved the texture of the yarn but it worms something awful. One comment please. The 2 pictures were taken on 2 different cameras. The close up of the stitch is the more true to color of the photos'. I had to use my husbands camera to take the photo so you could see what I made it for. Since the yarn I used was bulky it turned out just right. Sorry that the photo is not that great but I wanted to get it done and posted before I leave this morning.

Irish Hiking Scarf

Thanks for the KAL!!! I enjoyed seeing all the other gorgeous FOs.

I finished knitting the Irish Hiking Scarf during our trip to the in-laws. I worked on it during the drive (didn't want FIL to see his Christmas gift) back and forth to PGH. I wove in all the ends yesterday and had my Hubby take the picture.

Overall, it is a successful knit. This is my first cable project. I also learned how to knit cables without a cable needle. I may have to make another because Hubby wants one in Red. See my blog for more details.

Irish Hiking Wrist Warmers by KniTaPalooZa

Well, I have started another project today sinceI have been totally intrigued by the Irish Hiking Scarf since I saw it earlier this year. I then recently stumbled onto the wrist warmers that were made from the same pattern and the Irish Hiking KAL.

Well I started today making the first of two wrist warmers. I was not sure of the yardage on the yarn so I choose a yarn that I knew I had plenty of and that I could make a matching scarf and possibly enough for a hat.

I am using Plymouth Sunset on US#7 needles. I like what I have come up with so far. I have finished the first one and am already thinking of ways to do it MY way. Like normal I can never do a pattern completely as it says too... LOL I like to work on DPN's or in the Round and I think these will make up very nicely in that matter. I am also going to do a buttonhole thumb opening on my next pair like explained on knitty.com in the VooDoo wrist warmer pattern.

So far for just the 1 wristwarmer I have used about 3/4's the skein which only has 88yards. So once I have finished both of the wristwarmers I will post the exact yardage I used. I noticed that several people have asked the question and I was not able to find the answer to it.

The funny thing about this was while I was knitting the wrist warmer today my stepson looked at it and said he really liked it and then I told him I could make him a beanie(hat) and he was all jazzed about it. Infact he asked if he could go raid my stash to find the yarn he wanted it made with. I showed him the picture of the hat and now he is wanting to know how long it will take for me to make one for him and then he also ask if I would make one for his buddies J & E. Orders already and I have not even attempted one. As this discussion was going on my dear husband chimed in and requested the first one. So on Tuesday or Wednesday the boys are going to meet me at the LYS to pick out the yarn. I guess I know what I will be working on... LOL

BTW - I have a question for all you cablers: Which way do you prefer to make cables with? (either a wooden cable needle or a metal hook or the no needle method) Just wondering. I have been experimenting with both the wooden and the metal and so far I have to say I like the straight wooden cable needle the best.

Houston We have a Problem

Ok.. so I finished a pair of cabled wrist warmers. I recently or should I say a month ago got the new magazine KnitScene and I found an awesome pattern for a pair of wristwarmers in it. I started to make a pair. I finished one about 3 weeks ago and just had not had a chance to get the second one going. I finially decdied to get my butt in gear and make the other one. So instead of following the directions to a T - I thought I was but did not compair it to the one I had already finished. Here is what I found out I had done AFTER I had already casted on.... Oops.. 1inch of a problem here.

So now here is the fix. When I made the first one I did not like the thumb opening but thought when I made a second pair I would do a buttonhole instead of what the pattern calls for. So here is the simple fix. Make another mismatch pair. Yeap... 2 pairs out of the same yarn. Now I just hope I have enough to make both of them. Oops... that's what I get for not following the directions.

Here is the other pair of wrist warmers that I am working on. This also has had some problems. I think it is the knitter and not the yarn nor the pattern. I only frogged this 5x until I was completely happy. First frogging I found I did it wrong on the thumb opening and it curled on the ends so started it again. This time I totally messed it up... Don't ask. 3rd time would be a charm right? Nope not for me. The third time I messed um on the cable I did a CF6 instead of a CB6 big oops... and then the other time was just because I did not like the cast on and the first joining in the round. I finially got it all worked out and I absolutely love the wrist warmer. This is my variation on the Cloud 9 Glove pattern which can be found here. I made minor changes to the pattern.

First I have small fingers so doing 2 full sets of cables at the top before the thumb opening would make mittens on me. So I only did one. Also I put a 2 row 1x1 rib at both the top and bottom of the wristwarmer. I only did a cast on of 10/15/10 instead of a 12/15/12 cast on. The only other change I did is when you join back after the thumb opening is made. I did the 2 decreases for the wrist and then after those decrease rows, to compansate for my fat arm I did increases in the same place where the decreasese were. I did the M1 increase since the K1FB made like a hole.

I totally love the pattern and can not wait to finish the pair. One more to go. They are totally worth making.

I just finished the Basic Cable hat from SnB Nation last night.

I used size 7 Denise's, size 8 Addi's, and Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran. I love they way this hat turned out. It looks very impressive when finished but it was INCREDIBLY easy and took about 4 hours total to make.

Ok as anything else I do. I do it obessively. Obsessive Compulsive since 1966 which is not a bad thing. I just started knitting this year. I must be the odd ball since I really like DPN and Cables but I think I have found my place with you guys! Thanks for letting me join.

These are very quick and easy. I feel like I have been doing the Michael Jackson though. I finished the one warmer about 1 1/2 weeks ago and I just have not got going on the other one. The only thing that I would probably do to change this pattern is instead of doing the thumb opening like they say to pick up and knit in the round. I would leave that off. It seems to be just a tad to big and I only did 3 rows. I might do a pickup and a bind off to see if that just makes a more finished edge on it. Also since I never follow the directions to the tee using my own idea of yarn I had to do a minor alteration. I love the fit of the glove but at the hand portion it seemed just a little to loose so I sewed in Elastic Thread in a matching grey color. You can not even see it and it took care of eactly what I needed. I love that Rainbow Elastic Thread by K1C2.

The frogs have been crocking away at this project. I was more then 1/2 way completed when I completely messed it up. I started to take it out and then it was just a mess. I totally messed it up but I am back on it again. It should not take that long it just seems that I can not get it together. LOL

I discovered these yesterday and I was intreged by the thumb opening. I should be working on my other glove and finishing it but I just can not seem to get it together to work on it. Since I did not like the openning. I thought I would see how this ones goes. I like this one some much more but I can see that I am going to want to incorperate the 2 together. I like to have the ribbing on the rest of the glove where this one does not have ribbing. I like the appeal of this one. It is very quick and easy to make. This one I started last night while sitting in front of the TV. Something that I never do. I usually go and hide somewhere and knit. But last night I sat with my DH and my DSS and his girlfriend. I was able to get alot completed in a very short period of time. This is a must try pattern. Very easy to alter.

Last and Final Project(s):

I found this great simple book at Barnes and Noble the other day. Just Scarves by Lion Brand I was not going to buy it at the time becuase there were only 2 patterns that I really wanted out of it but I hesitated. I got home and then thought about the book more and had to run down there the next morning and get it. The book has several cable projects in it. The first is picture on the cover a very bulky scarf with one large cable. The other pattern is also a bulky weight shoulder wrap. I am going to make both of them but I have to wait for the yarn to arrive. I am going to make them with Plymouth Baby Alpaca Grande.

I would like to tell you just how talented you all are. I love looking at all your fantastic projects and ideas. Thank you once again for letting me join your little realm of the web. I hope to be able to show more progress in the near future of my projects.

I wrote up the pattern for my Instant Gratification Scarf. It is a simple cable pattern that I am going to use to teach a cabling class at a LYS. It knits up fast--I finished it in two evenings, which includes the time I spent trying a few different cable patterns before finding the one I liked the best. It's been kind of quiet so I thought I'd check in and see how you all are doing? I haven't been cabling, I'm sorry to say. I need to clear my daughter's Christmas stocking off the needles, and finish a couple more gifts. I promise to start up a cabled sweater by Thanksgiving, however? Now just which one to pick. My choices are Kepler (Cascade 220 Tweed in Eggplant), Bonne-Marie's Twist (I've got several choices in my stash, all pink), or Blackberry (Jamieson's Shetland Chumky in a purpley blue). Any thoughts about which one I should start? Anyone complete any of these sweaters?

Howdy Hi! I'm new to cables and the KAL. Everyone's work here is so fab.

This is my first work with cables and they are truly addicting. This is a front panel of the cardigan "Bless" from Rowan's "Cork Collection". The color is Dawn and the Cork itself is downright strange to knit with. Much like a bungie cord - but it is so warm and lofty - I love it. The cable is more of a serpentine wave, but hey, it's still a cable.

Next cabling will be on Twisted Sister's "Eve" scarf which is actually reversible, so the cables are the same on each side - nice!

Cabling trauma, or, How To Give Yourself a Heart Attack at 6AM

1. 5:00 AM. Wake up early, probably from having had too much coffee the night before. Think to self, "I know that I'm halfway through the hood on my Rogue ... if I get cracking now, then I'm sure I can finish it by the time the kids get up."

2. Realize that you're already delusional with unrealistic expectations, but ignore it and still think you can do it.

3. Start row 30 on your Rogue hood ... only 50 more to go.

4. 5:30 AM. Make about eight rows of progress when you realize that you made a mistake ...

... about eight rows ago. The same mistake you made in the armpit. Wonder silently (the kids are sleeping, after all) if a mistake on the hood is more noticeable than a mistake in the armpit.

5. 5:35 AM. After reasoning with yourself over the last question, think to yourself, "If I only rip out those center four stitches, I'm sure that I can go back and fix it without doing all of those rows over again."

6. 5:36 AM. Start ripping out the stitches. Realize that in order to get those stockinette stitches uncrossed, you'll have to rip out just a few more stitches.

7. Rip out all of the stitches that are in the hood cable here. Don't swear to yourself, at least not too loudly, because you don't want to wake up the kids.

8. Wonder what row you're really on. Pretend to know, and start to re-knit, given the long strands that you have across the back.

Acrylic for cables?

I need some advice & thought I would ask the cable experts over here. :) I picked up a bunch of very pretty & soft DK weight yarn which I would like to use to make a heavily cabled garment - possibly a jacket. However, the yarn is 100% acrylic & I have never knit with acrylic before so I have no idea how the yarn will act. Does it hold a cable well? How about blocking? I have heard people say that acrylic won't really block - is that true & if so is that a problem? I haven't thought that cabled sweaters really needed much blocking - especially if there are cables all over it.

Well - what do you guys think? I'm totally into this yarn - so pretty, soft & CHEAP! About $5 for 240 yards. I'm all about that! But is it suitable or do I need to use it for something else?

Two cabled presents

I've been a delinquent blogger, but a furious knitter. I have finished two more cabled projects which wraps up my holiday knitting for the year. I finally finished the DNA scarf for my brother after allowing it to languish forever.

And I made a cabled hat for my dad. Everyone else gets store-bought presents because everyone else received knitting gifts during the past year.

Though the gift cabling is finished, cabling continues unabated! I just cast on for a simple cabled scarf of my own design that I will use as a prototype for the cabling class that I will be teaching.

I just found this group, and I'm sorry I didn't find it earlier because I LOVE cables! I am currently working on a Hatmione out of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran. The yarn is so soft and wonderful to knit with, and the cable definition is excellent! I highly recommend it. Here are two in progress pics:

Quick Cabled Cap

I just got Elsebeth Lavold's Viking Patterns for Knitting book and was immediately dying to try something from it. Her explanations of the technical aspects of how to do her methods of cabling were fantastically easy to understand so I wanted to jump right in. So I made this:
It is:

The pattern: Ragna Cap
The yarn: Katia Montana 2 skeins in color 82857 (that I had in my stash FOREVER)
The tools: size seven addi turbo circs and a stitch holder
Montana has no ply or twist to it so I was having a hard time getting even the blunt tips of the addi's not to split the yarn when I tried to do my usual method of cabling with no cable needle. Since there was a lot going on anyway with the Celtic braid motif I finally gave in and used a stitch holder in place of a cable needle. Why a stitch holder? Because it was handy. It's also very thin so easy to get under and pick the yarn up with. So I guess technically I still cabled without a cable needle. (Please - humor me - I need to hold on to my illusions!)
This was so quick to make - just a few hours from start to finish. I think a few people might be getting one for Christmas. Also - I'm so proud of myself that I used - gasp! - stash yarn. I hope you can see the cables well enough in this photo - they are very sharp in real life, even with the heathery yarn.

My First Cables!

After a rousing game of start and frog that I played for three weeks, I decided to ixnay the scarf plan, and start a smaller project. I made these Irish Hiking Wrist Warmers with the pattern I found here.

I used some Wool-Ease from my stash...these took about half a skein...and size 8 bamboo needles.

The verdict?

I LOVE CABLES.
So fun, and way easier than I thought. I already have two more cable projects in the works...I am now a cable junkie.

OK - now that the sweater has finished blocking, I've taken some better pictures. Here's the sweater as a whole.

By the way, the blocking board I was using is a piece of foam insulation from Home Depot. It costs about $20-25, and I have two separate boards cut from that single piece.

Possibly one of the most boring items I've ever made, and I love it. Based on the Irish Hiking Scarf, but 4 repeats of 4 stitch cables, rather than 3 of 6. Made with left over Lamb's Pride Worsted and just the right length!

Here it is - all finished.

The stats:
Pattern: Hurricane vest from Rowan Plaid Collection
Yarn: 8 balls of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Superchunky
What I learned: Finishing! Shoulder seams, picking up stitches for collar and armhole ribbing.
I also learned that Cashmerino Superchunky is a very fast knit & very warm and soft. I would definately use it again.
Hubby loves the vest & is wearing it at work today. :)

I decided yesterday to start Blackberry from Knitty. It is going well so far but here's the major problem. I have 7 skeins of Noro Kabuto. I started, but then realized I'm going to need about _12_ skeins of Noro Kabuto to finish this project! I'm going to keep going and may end up using a different yarn for the sleeves and/or edging.

Cable 41 Front

Well, here is the completed Cable 41 front. I was having such trouble, it's a relief to have it completed. I was so into getting the cables right that I would forget to cast off for the armholes and decrease for the neck...those little things that tend to be important.

I'm going to concentrate REEEEEeeeEEEeeeal hard and maybe I'll have no hang ups when working on the sleeves.

Charlotte, a quick knit...

I finished up Charlotte yesterday and took her how for a spin at a Texas Hold 'em Poker Night at our friends' home. She had a good time. She helped the Mr. and I to break even, not bad for a rookie.

In knitting notes, Charlotte only took about 2 1/3 balls of Ribbon Twist. I have enough left to make a skinny scarf, or a small hat. I didn't find the cables too hard to do, but it is a relatively simple pattern, using big yarn so it was easy to see what I was doing. I do feel like I can try to take on some more difficult patterns now. I think Kepler or Blackberry will be next on the Cable list. Weaving in the ends was the only sticky point in the knit. My yarn needle kept getting stuck in the ribbon part. The whole project took me three days. I love having a quick project sometimes.

This wrap/ponchette (I'm gritting my teeth as I write the p word) is going quite quickly. The size 17 needles are helping with the overall speed of the project. I just started it yesterday, and I'm already half done. I love the look of the Ribbon Twist yarn and it's been relatively easy to work with. For my first cable project I think it's going rather well. Once I finish 'er up, I'll feel up to sinking my cable needle into Bonne Marie's Twist, and Kepler.

I'm making quick progress on my cabled sweater. The first 7" are knit on size 15 needles, and I thought that would be fun. No fun, however. Its like knitting with logs. After 7" the directions say switch to a size 13, which is much better. When I get to 16" I switch to size 11 needles. The needle size gets continually smaller as I approach the neck. This is knit in the round and its a really easy pattern to follow. The yarn is Knit Picks Sierra.

Intro

Hi! My name is Christina, and I'm currently working on two cable projects. The first one is the Weekend Sweater in Cashmerino Aran. I started this project two Christmases ago and have only made it halfway up the back.
The second is the Cable and Moss Stitch Jacket in DB Merino Aran. I bought this yarn over two years ago to make my daughter the 18-24 month size. Thank goodness the sizes run big, because she's about to turn three! As long as I finish it this year, it'll definitely fit her.

Cabled Vest

While Willow waits paitently for me to re-knit the bit of neck shaping I messed up I took a detour and knit up this:

It is the Hurricane vest from Rowan Plaid Collection. I used Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Superchunky that I got on sale at the LYS. I had been dying to use this yarn so as soon as I got some I scrounged around for a pattern to use it on. Lucky hubby will be the recipient of this nice soft vest. :) It was SUPER speedy to knit (only 2 1/2 days!) and the yarn was really nice to work with.

I liked the reverse stockinette and how it makes the cable stand out a bit. It also gives some dimension to the yarn which otherwise might actually be too soft looking. Hopefully, I will get a chance to put this baby together soon!
For my next cable project I want to try something a little bit more difficult....time to look at patterns again. :)

I have a very soft spot for cables, if an item has cables, I am attracted to it like a moth to a flame.

Hmm...a bit about me, I am a fairly new knitter. I learn in April and since then I cannot put my needles down. I also enjoy loom knitting and creating new patterns with them.

Kerrin is done, and I even have a picture of it in sunlight. Given the weather lately, the sunlight is just as much of a surprise as the finished shawl....

I am extremely happy that this is done. Not that it wasn't a fun project (or a beautiful finished object!), but about 60 rows from the end, I just really wanted to not do any more of it....

The little tassels were really fun, too. You can hide ends in them instead of weaving ends in, so that was a really nice change of pace.

I'm pondering another cable KAL project, but I don't know yet. Depends entirely on whether or not my schedule for the next week holds up.

Cabled Shrug First Repeat

I finished the first repeat on my Cabled Shrug. This is not something I can do while chatting unfortunately, though I gave it a good try this past Friday. There are only a couple of mistakes but none are noticeable enough for me to care. I used a full ball of yarn before I finished the repeat. I hope I have enough...

Grace Cardigan

I've started my second cable project for this fall. (But I haven't finished the first one yet.)

It is Grace from Debbie Bliss's Cotton Angora book. I'm using Karabella's Aurora 8 because I heard that the Cotton Angora loses stitch definition and because I'm tired of working with cotton. (Plus, neither cotton nor angora are very resilient, which would make cabling less fun.)

Willow

I finally got the photos of Willow "in progress" onto my computer. Just in time too since I have actually finished the knitting! Well...I thought I had finished the knitting until I went to block the fronts and noticed I had neglected to reverse the neck shaping on the left side. Sigh...guess what I will be re-knitting tonight? :)

These are the sleeves. The yarn is actually quite a bit darker than the photo shows. Darn flash - washes out everything and makes the cables look flat too. :(

Overall, I have really enjoyed knitting this jacket. The pattern was really well written (despite what one would think due to my knitting brain-fart!). The yarn itself was Rowan Harris Chunky Tweed. The first ball I used had three knots in it!! But there has only been one more since then so I have been happy with it. Knots in yarn are my pet peeve.

Close up:

I have blocked the back section but I am really daunted about the finishing/construction for this whole project. In fact, if I had thought about it properly I probably would have been scared off of knitting it! I have to sew in pockets & knit a pocket border, pick up and knit stitches for a collar, sew on a button band, buttons and make button holes that will match up with the buttons! I've never done any of this before - except making a collar which I wasn't too happy with the one other time I have done it. :( I've got the pocket placed - not hard but I'm hating the thought of having to sew it down. Oh dear... Wish me luck!!

On the other hand - I am rather proud that this is only my second time knitting cables and I managed to learn to cable without using a cable needle. I really can't picture doing it any other way now!

But I'm in Love! Here is the back of my Trellis. I'm up to the neck shaping on the Fronts. I'm working two at a time. I'll do the sleeves the same and have enough left for a baby Coronet. This is all done in Caron Simply Soft Brights - Limelight. As this is for my soon-to-be-One Niece for Christmas, I wanted "easy care".

So I had some spare time this weekend ... Between waiting in airports, actually flying on air- planes and watching my lovely friends made even lovelier (thanks to the talents of a fabulous hair and makeup artist hired for the wedding I was at in SoCal this weekend), I have a Kerrin shawl that's about 60% done....

I've joined the two wings/arm covers and am now working the back of the shawl as one piece, though the pattern suggests keeping the "wings" separate and seaming them together during finishing. I wanted to be able to control the cable decreases so the cables end in a more traditional fashion, rather than disappearing into a seam.

Also, I think someone asked further down if I'm adding tassels, and the answer is an emphatic YES. I'm not normally a fan of tassels and fringe (both the look of them and the actual fringing/tasseling process), but a.) this isn't for me to wear, and b.) I think this shawl looks considerably more finished and more elegant WITH tassels (though I'll deny it if anyone asks me in person). The larger "yarn ropes" that constitute the tassels in the pattern are part of what gives this shawl its "outdoor sophisticate" look.

If I finish in the next week or so, I might have to start that cute little cropped sweater that's a few posts down. I've seen that sweater on a model at one of my local LYSs and it's adorable!

Hello everybody ...

I apologize if I've already introduced myself. (I don't think I have ... you'll understand if I'm repeating myself I hope.)

My name is Jenifer, I love to knit cables, and I of course had to jump on board onto this bandwagon of cabling madness. I'm enjoying seeing your projects unfold as well.

First of: I'm working on Rogue, and I'm actually signed up for the knitalong of "Gone Rogue" with fellow Denverites and whoever else wants to join in ... but I thought I'd just mention that here.

Next up: I'd like to start the "Curry Cabled Cardigan" sweater from a past Fall IWK using Jo Sharp Silkroad Aran Tweed in #124 Jewel (sort of a deep red). You can see a nice version here worked up by Cara. I hope to start this in October some time ... and finish by Thanksgiving. I've had the yarn for this sweater for a year... and this is the perfect time to make it!

another introduction

Hi everyone! I was inspired to join this KAL by Jenifer - who is also the person who taught me how to cable. I am working on two cable sweaters for my nephew (just born a week ago).

First is the gray one in the bottom picture - which I haven't begun yet.

Second is the olive and red one - for which I have a front and a back.

I'm having a bit of trouble getting the pictures uploaded and positioned where I'd like them to be in blogger (never used this before). Hopefully when I get some pictures of my progress, I'll be able to do a better job. In the meantime, happy cabling!

Hi, I still haven't introduced myself, so I thought I'd do that now. I'm from FindingHer, and I'm working on a scarf based on this one I saw on Knitting Interrupted. Like given in the notes there, it's based on the Parrot House Stole in Lavish Lace. I liked the idea of lace and cables, and have been working on this since the day before the KAL started (I know, I'm a cheat). I'm making it in KnitPicks Wool of the Andes, in Hush.

I'm also planning on doing a Irish Hiking scarf. Both are Christmas/birthday gifts (the above lacy and cable, for my boyfriend's mother's birthday, and the Irish Hiking scarf is for my father's Christmas gift).

Or a really, really early start. I started this sweater ages ago (roughly 2001) and hopefully I'll finally finish it this year. The sleeves are done, now all that is left is the front, the cowl and the sewing together. It didn't help that I just had to change the style a bit and then changed my mind after doing the back once already.

Will update with what the designer planned for the sweater to look like when I get home and can access the original pattern.

Looking forward to seeing eveyone's progress! I love cables. It's the reason I wanted to learn to knit in the first place.

Getting started on the fronts

Well, my cardigan with no pattern is progressing nicely. I've finished both sleeves, and they fit! So I'm now starting on the right front. So far I think it looks pretty good. I'm doing some waist shaping on the sides and I've been taking notes all along the way so I can try to repeat the same shaping on the left front and the back. Once I'm done with the fronts I will still need to decide if I'm going to put cables on the back or if I will just do 2x2 rib on the entire back, or maybe a combination of the two, I'm open to suggestions!

I've been waiting patiently these last few weeks to cast on my first cable project of the season. I will be starting with this cable jacket from VK which I cast on for this morning.

I'm already a third of the way finished the back (it is a really quick knit) but the back doesn't have any cables so I'll wait to post a progress pic. until there is some cable action going on.
I will also be making Trellis from Knittyand will begin as soon as I get the correct needles.

Hey everyone! Well here we are on our opening first day! I've 'officially' started in on the Rebecca 27 Cable Sweater #41 [hereby referred to as Cable 41...like the Area 51 of cabled knitting]. The ribbing has been super quick and I'm looking forward to the rest of the process. The process may include eliminating the collar, but I'm still in the decision phase.
